Ronaldo suspended 30 days, fined for leaving Portugal camp
Cristiano Ronaldo has been suspended for 30 days and fined by the Portuguese Football Federation for leaving the national team camp without permission.
Cristiano Ronaldo received a 30-day suspension and a 255 euro ($285) fine from the Portuguese Football Federation for walking out on the national team camp. The federation provisionally suspended the player and on Monday deemed the punishment “adequate and sufficient.”
Ronaldo admitted to the charges in a formal statement submitted on Friday. The federation cited his confession and clean disciplinary record as factors in reducing the punishment. The fine represents the maximum allowable by the federation after considering mitigating circumstances.
The suspension began on Oct. 1, the day of Portugal's match against Denmark. Ronaldo has served 19 days of the suspension and is expected to be available for Portugal's next Nations League match on Nov. 14 against Denmark.
During recent Nations League fixtures, Ronaldo played in the opening win against Wales. He was an unused substitute in a subsequent win in Norway on Sept. 27. Ronaldo subsequently accused coach Jorge Jesus of breaking an agreement to play him and left the camp. Without Ronaldo, Portugal went on to defeat Denmark and Norway, securing qualification for the quarterfinals.
Ronaldo can appeal the suspension but had previously apologized and stated he expected to be punished. He had not publicly commented on the suspension announcement as of Monday.
