Ronaldo Explains Departure From Portugal Squad in Lengthy Statement

Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence regarding his departure from the Portuguese national team camp, releasing an extensive statement detailing his perspective on events leading to his exit. The 41-year-old footballer aimed considerable criticism at manager Jorge Jesus, accusing him of broken promises and a lack of transparency.

Ronaldo stated that following the 2026 World Cup, he had intended to retire from international football but was persuaded by the President of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) to reconsider. He also claimed to have given his approval for Jesus's appointment as head coach, believing it to be the correct decision.

According to Ronaldo, Jesus initially assured him of his fundamental importance to the team's project and outlined a plan for his participation, including playing the first and last matches of upcoming friendlies. However, Jesus later proposed that Ronaldo not travel for matches in Norway and Denmark, instead suggesting he remain in Portugal for physical management and rejoin later. Ronaldo asserts he immediately refused this proposal, deeming it a poor example.

He further alleged that on the eve of the camp, Jesus visited his home and reiterated the agreed-upon plan. Ronaldo played the first match and was substituted, but he claims he made no issue of it at the time, even personally handing the captain's armband to Bruno Fernandes. The following day, Ronaldo was informed by a coach's assistant that Jesus wanted to speak with him. To his surprise, Jesus asked if he was fit to play 30 minutes, a request Ronaldo agreed to, only to be left warming up without being brought into the game.

Ronaldo described this as a second instance of Jesus breaking his word. He stated his intention to leave the camp without waiting for further breaches of trust, emphasizing his belief in the importance of truth in relationships.

He recounted a subsequent conversation with Jesus and FPF sporting director Simão Coutinho, where they agreed that Jesus would clarify the situation in a press conference. Ronaldo expected Jesus to state that he never asked to play specific minutes, that the camp plan was proposed by the coach, and that his omission from the Norway match was a mistake. However, Ronaldo claims the press conference did not reflect this agreement, and he felt Jesus displayed an unacceptable aggressiveness and an "I want, I can and I command" attitude.

In his statement, Ronaldo included notes he had validated, which were meant to be presented by Jesus. These notes acknowledged that Ronaldo never questioned the coach's options, was exemplary and professional, and that the Norway match was not part of the original plan. The notes also admitted a mistake in warming up a player of Ronaldo's stature without bringing him into the game. The validated notes concluded with Jesus expressing a strong desire to have Ronaldo in the national team.

Ronaldo also addressed his decision not to greet the fans after the Norway match, apologizing for his actions and attributing it to frustration. He reiterated his commitment to the national team, stating he would always be available to compete if physically well and serving any suspension.

He concluded by apologizing to his teammates for leaving the camp, taking full responsibility for his actions, and suggesting that the Portuguese Football Federation should assess and punish his behavior. He expressed a desire for a dignified farewell in the future but stressed his priority remains competition for his country.
