Ronald Koeman has resigned as head coach of the Netherlands, announcing his decision on Instagram hours after the team's World Cup exit following a penalty shootout defeat against Morocco. The 63-year-old former Barcelona and Everton boss cited personal reasons, including his wife's battle with breast cancer, and a broader perspective shift on life's priorities.

"Last night I took the decision to end my stint as head coach of the Dutch National Team," Koeman wrote. "We all dreamed of a World Cup in which we would write history. That didn't work out. No one is more disappointed about that than me. As a head coach, you carry that responsibility."

Koeman's second tenure with the national team, which began in 2023, has concluded abruptly. His initial period as head coach was from 2018 to 2020 before he departed for Barcelona. He returned following the retirement of Louis van Gaal after the 2022 World Cup. During his first spell, Koeman guided the Netherlands to the semi-finals of Euro 2024, where they were defeated by England.

"Moreover, the past years have made me realise again that there are more important things than football," Koeman added. "Football has been my life, but health is priceless. When someone you love is fighting a tough battle, your perspective changes."

He expressed gratitude to the players, staff, the KNVB (Dutch FA), and supporters for their trust and support throughout his time with the national team. The Netherlands' World Cup campaign ended in the last 32 after a 1-1 draw with Morocco in regular and extra time, followed by a loss in the penalty shootout.

Recent media reports in the Netherlands had been critical of the team's performance and style of play, with some outlets questioning the roles of captain Virgil van Dijk and Koeman himself. The Dutch finished their World Cup journey after the tense match in Monterrey.
