Telstar goalkeeper Ronald Koeman Jr. scored two penalties, the second in the 11th minute of added time, to earn his team a 2-2 draw against Cambuur in the Dutch Eredivisie. The 31-year-old goalkeeper's brace marked a remarkable comeback for his side, who had been playing with 10 men for over an hour.
Telstar went down to 10 men in the 22nd minute when striker Nokkvi Thorisson received a red card. Cambuur took a 2-0 lead shortly after halftime. Koeman Jr. then converted a penalty in the 67th minute to reduce the deficit.
In a dramatic finish, Telstar were awarded another penalty, but the referee initially overturned the decision after a VAR review, only to award another spot-kick in the final moments of the game. Koeman Jr. successfully converted this second penalty, securing the draw for Telstar.
This performance made Koeman Jr. the first goalkeeper to score two goals in a single Eredivisie match. He has now scored three penalties for Telstar this year. He previously scored his first penalty for the club in the final game of last season and has since become the team's designated penalty taker.
"Back in my youth, I used to take it sometimes and I missed," Koeman Jr. said after a previous match. "But now I’m shooting it well."
He also recalled how he became the first-choice penalty taker. "In the first half of the season, we got two penalties and we missed both of them. Then at Sparta away, Anthony (Correia, then manager) came up to me at half-time and asked if I wanted to take it if we got one. So then I said: 'Yes, of course, why not?'"
Ronald Koeman Jr. is the son of Ronald Koeman, the legendary Dutch player and manager who previously managed clubs including Southampton and Everton, as well as the Netherlands national team. His father resigned as Netherlands boss after their 2026 World Cup exit in the round of 32.
