Ronald Koeman Jr. was overcome with emotion during a recent Eredivisie match for Telstar, as fans paid tribute to his late mother, Bartina. The goalkeeper was visibly moved as supporters honored his mother, who recently died at the age of 65 after a battle with breast cancer.
During the match between Telstar and AZ Alkmaar, play was paused in the 13th minute. Bartina's image was displayed on the stadium's big screen, and fans from both clubs joined in a minute of applause. Telstar supporters also held sparklers aloft as Koeman Jr. acknowledged the tribute. He was seen crying, wiping his eyes with his shirt before applauding the crowd.
Football icon Ronald Koeman Sr. announced his wife Bartina's death last week, sharing a heartfelt message on Instagram. The couple had been married for 41 years and had three children and four grandchildren.
Bartina had previously battled breast cancer, overcoming it in 2010. She was re-diagnosed in 2023, with metastases detected last year for which she was undergoing treatment.
Koeman Sr. spoke of his wife's unwavering support for his coaching career, even during her illness. He stated, "My wife Bartina supported and encouraged me every day, despite her own illness, to finish my work as national coach. That is a testament to incredible strength. I am more grateful to her for that than I will ever be able to put into words."
Bartina was also a successful entrepreneur, establishing her own cosmetics and skincare line.
