Roger Federer, the 20-time Grand Slam champion who retired from professional tennis in September 2022, is set to play two exhibition matches on Friday, Aug. 25, during US Open Fan Week. The matches will take place at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing, New York.
Federer will first compete in a singles match against former rival Andy Roddick, who won the US Open in 2003. This will be followed by a doubles match where Federer will partner with John McEnroe to face Roddick and Andre Agassi.
Federer last played in the US Open in 2019, reaching the quarterfinals before falling to Grigor Dimitrov. He has stated that he has no plans to return to competitive play beyond these exhibition matches.
The exhibition matches are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. ET. Viewers can watch the event on ESPN2. For those without cable, the matches can be streamed via DIRECTV, which offers a five-day free trial, or through a $4.99 day pass on Sling TV Orange, providing 24 hours of access.
Federer expressed a mix of emotions about returning to Arthur Ashe Stadium, a venue where he secured many victories. "I don’t know how it’s going to go tomorrow," Federer said. "So, there is a lot of uncertainty — but a lot of happiness that I can return to Arthur Ashe, a place where I have had so many beautiful moments."
