Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has responded to criticism surrounding the team's acquisition of pitcher Tarik Skubal, asserting that other clubs possessed the same capacity to make a similar move. The Dodgers secured the two-time American League Cy Young Award winner from the Detroit Tigers on Saturday in exchange for prospects Zyhir Hope, River Ryan, and Brady Smith.

Roberts pushed back against the narrative of the Dodgers' unchecked spending power, stating Sunday that the team utilized resources it had cultivated. "It just seems like there’s always blowback with us," Roberts said, via ESPN. "There’s nothing that we did that no one else couldn’t have done."

He credited the organization's scouting and player-development departments for sustaining a strong farm system, even with consecutive championship appearances. "We have to have the players to go pull something like this off, and we’ve still got, you know, arguably the top one or two or three farm systems in baseball," Roberts added. "So it’s a credit to a lot of people in this organization."

Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman indicated that the front office was prepared to pursue a specific player aggressively at the deadline. Roberts characterized the team's trade deadline strategy as singular: "It was Skubal or nothing."

Skubal joins a Dodgers pitching staff that could potentially include Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Shohei Ohtani, Blake Snell, and Tyler Glasnow. With several pitchers currently sidelined by injury, Skubal's arrival provides immediate reinforcement to the rotation.

The Dodgers, who are pursuing a third consecutive World Series title, currently lead the NL West. Skubal is slated to make his debut on Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.
