Roberto Mancini has been appointed as the head coach of the Italian national football team for a second tenure, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) announced.

Mancini's previous stint as manager ended in April after Italy failed to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup. Following this disappointment, Gennaro Gattuso was slated to take over the role.

However, Andrea Pirlo withdrew his candidacy on Monday due to controversy surrounding his alleged ties to a Russian betting company. FIGC president Giovanni Malago stated that the federation believed Mancini was the most suitable candidate for the position.

"I believed that the best person to become head coach was Roberto Mancini," Malago said.
