South Sydney's rising star Dayne Jennings will miss the remainder of the season due to a severe leg injury that became infected and required multiple surgeries. The 18-year-old suffered the injury on July 12 during the Rabbitohs' victory over the Newcastle Knights when Dominic Young's boot accidentally made contact with his leg, causing a deep laceration.
Injury and Complications
The wound, which required 35 stitches, extended from Jennings' thigh across his knee. His condition worsened when the cut became infected, leading to over a week in the hospital and several procedures to clean and close the injury. Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett confirmed Jennings has returned to the club but is not yet able to run, indicating he is unlikely to play again this season.
NRL Physio noted that the location of the wound, passing over the knee, complicated the recovery, and the subsequent infection made the situation particularly difficult. Graphic images of the laceration circulated online, prompting reactions from fans.
Debate Over Footwear
Some supporters questioned the severity of the wound caused by a football boot, with many advocating for a ban on metal studs in the National Rugby League (NRL). "Who had the sharp studs on their boots? That is a nasty gash," one fan commented, while another asked, "I still can't believe metal studs are legal."
There is no indication that Dominic Young's footwear was illegal or that the injury was deliberately caused; the contact was described as accidental. Metal studs are currently permitted in the NRL, provided they meet safety regulations, including having rounded edges and a minimum diameter of 8mm at the tip. Referees also have the authority to order players to change boots deemed dangerous.
Jennings' Promising Rise Halted
The injury marks a premature end to a rapid ascent for Jennings, who progressed from South Sydney's junior SG Ball Cup side to the NRL. He made his first-grade debut in Round 17 and scored his maiden NRL try in his second appearance. Jennings played three first-grade matches in his rookie season, registering one try, two line breaks, and nine tackle breaks. He was replaced by Jye Gray following his injury against the Knights, with Gray going on to score the decisive try in the match.
