Rio Ferdinand Calls for Man City Title Stripping After Financial Rule Verdict

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has called for Manchester City to be stripped of a Premier League title after the club was found guilty of 114 financial rule breaches. The charges relate to alleged widespread financial cheating over a period of sustained success.

An independent panel delivered the guilty verdict on all but one of the 115 charges concerning the Premier League's financial regulations. Manchester City, who deny the charges, are expected to appeal the decision.

Ferdinand, who was part of the Manchester United team that lost the 2011-12 Premier League title to City on goal difference, took to social media to voice his opinion. "Another Premier League medal to be added to the cabinet," the 47-year-old wrote, referencing the dramatic final-day victory secured by Sergio Aguero's last-minute goal against QPR.

Potential punishments for Manchester City could include significant points deductions, financial penalties, or even relegation. Points deductions could potentially be applied retrospectively, raising the possibility of titles being revoked.

A Manchester City spokesperson stated that the Premier League process is ongoing and subject to strict confidentiality. The club reiterated its consistent position since February 2023, emphasizing that they have "diligently respected due process for eight years" and expected the Premier League Board and Executive to act as an independent, impartial, and fair-minded regulator.
