Republic of Ireland Player Calls for Israel Match Boycott

Republic of Ireland midfielder Jason Knight has become the first national team player to publicly state his opposition to playing against Israel in their upcoming Nations League fixture. The sides are scheduled to meet on Sunday in Debrecen, Hungary, with a return match set for October 4 in Serbia.

Calls for the Republic of Ireland to withdraw from the games have intensified since the draw, driven by the ongoing conflict in Gaza. A campaign titled 'Stop The Game' has gained momentum.

Prior to the Republic of Ireland's 1-0 defeat against Kosovo on Thursday, stand-in captain Dara O'Shea confirmed that the players would convene on Friday to discuss their stance on the match against Israel. This fixture, which will be played without any Irish fans in attendance, is considered a home game for the Republic, despite being held in Hungary.

"It's difficult, the manager, and Dara, and Nathan [Collins] spoke well about it, I don't think the game should be going ahead but it is going ahead," Knight stated after the Kosovo match. "We'll have a deeper talk about it and what that means, we'll get our thoughts as a group and go from there."

Knight, who plays in the English Championship, acknowledged that he had considered the situation. "I think it was a difficult one. It's obviously big talk in Ireland. I have been focusing on my football in England in the Championship. But I knew this was coming so I had a think about it."

The current conflict began when the armed Palestinian group Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, resulting in approximately 1,200 deaths and the taking of 251 hostages. In response, Israel initiated a large-scale military operation in Gaza. According to the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza, over 73,000 people have been killed in the territory, figures that have been deemed reliable by the United Nations.

"We had chats about it with the players, and more senior players on what the step will be," added Bristol City midfielder Knight. "Now we're here, we can have a really in depth talk of what that means and what the consequences are. We'll do that [on Friday] and go from there."

Knight expressed confidence in his ability to manage the situation. "I am quite experienced. None of us have gone through this scenario before but I'd like to think I'm experienced, thick skin and can get through most things and that is what I will try and do. I'll try and focus on the football as much as I can. I'll give my view and my thoughts on when I see fit, but I'll be trying to focus on the football as much as possible."
