The Boston Red Sox saw their historic 15-game winning streak, a franchise record, come to an end on Wednesday in a doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles.
The streak concluded after the Red Sox secured a 6-3 victory in the first game, matching the longest winning run in club history. Boston established an early 4-0 lead in that game with key hits from Caleb Durbin and Jarren Duran, followed by Duran's sacrifice fly and Cedanne Rafaela's solo home run.
However, the second game of the doubleheader saw the Orioles secure a 5-1 win, halting Boston's momentum. The Orioles took a 4-0 lead in the first inning against Red Sox starter Eduardo Rivera, who allowed four runs on three hits. The Red Sox offense was limited to only five hits in the nightcap.
Despite the streak's end, players expressed pride in their accomplishment. "That was a great ride, a 15-game winning streak," said first baseman Willson Contreras. "There's nothing to be sad about. We have to be happy. We should be proud of what we did and from now keep playing the way we've been playing."
Interim manager Chad Tracy acknowledged the streak's inevitable conclusion. "We just won 15 games in a row and I think all of us knew it was going to end at some point," Tracy stated. He noted the historical significance, mentioning Ted Williams and recognizing the achievement.
The 15-game winning streak marked a significant turnaround for the Red Sox's season. After firing manager Alex Cora earlier in the campaign and holding last place in the AL East with a 37-48 record on July 1, the team has since climbed to third place. Boston now holds the final American League Wild Card spot, leading the Seattle Mariners by two games.
