Red Sox Remove Interim Tag, Name Chad Tracy Full-Time Manager
Tracy led Boston to a 74-55 record and a postseason berth after taking over mid-season.
The Boston Red Sox have removed the interim tag from manager Chad Tracy, officially naming him the 49th manager in franchise history. The announcement comes after Tracy guided the team to a remarkable turnaround, leading them to a 74-55 record since taking over on April 25.
Tracy assumed managerial duties when the Red Sox were struggling with a 10-17 record. Under his leadership, the team achieved the second-best record in the American League and the fifth-best in Major League Baseball from that point forward. The club also experienced its best 30-game stretch in franchise history, going 27-3 between July 3 and August 7.
This success has earned Tracy a three-year contract through the 2029 season, with an option for 2030. The Red Sox also exercised team options for chief baseball officer Craig Breslow for the 2029 and 2030 seasons, aligning their organizational timelines.
Red Sox President & CEO Sam Kennedy praised both Tracy and Breslow, stating, "Craig and Chad are two exceptionally talented leaders who have earned these opportunities in very different ways." Kennedy highlighted Tracy's ability to command trust in a difficult situation and noted that "What this team has accomplished over the past several months has been historic." He further emphasized that results, judgment, character, and the ability to inspire others are crucial qualities, all of which Tracy has demonstrated.
The Red Sox's performance under Tracy has secured them a postseason berth. They are expected to face the New York Yankees in a Wild Card Series, a matchup that could offer a chance for redemption after being eliminated by the Yankees in the same round last season.
Tracy, 41, brings a wealth of experience to the managerial role. He played in the minor leagues for eight seasons from 2006 to 2013 and began his coaching career in 2015. He spent seven seasons in the Los Angeles Angels organization, including three years as a minor league manager, and served as a minor league coordinator before joining the Red Sox in 2022 as the manager of Triple-A Worcester. His promotion to the major league team came in April.
