The Boston Red Sox completed a four-game sweep of the New York Yankees with a dramatic 5-4 victory in extra innings on Sunday night at Fenway Park. A walk-off single by Jarren Duran in the bottom of the 10th inning sealed the win for Boston.
The Yankees had taken a two-run lead in the top of the 10th inning after a rally in the ninth erased a two-run deficit against former Yankee Aroldis Chapman. In the 10th, Max Schuemann, the automatic runner, scored from second on a sinking liner to right field by Amed Rosario. Wilyer Abreu's misplay on the catch allowed Schuemann to score, and Abreu's subsequent wild throw home advanced Rosario to second base.
Rosario then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Oswaldo Cabrera. Austin Wells followed with a swinging bunt down the third base line, allowing Rosario to score and give the Yankees a 4-2 lead.
However, the Red Sox responded in the bottom of the inning against Yankees reliever Fernando Cruz. Schuemann, again the automatic runner, scored on a hit, bringing the Red Sox within one run. Following a walk and a sacrifice bunt, Duran delivered the game-winning single.
Sonny Gray, a former Yankee himself, had pitched 7 ⅓ no-hit innings for the Red Sox, holding the Yankees hitless until Rosario broke up the bid in the eighth inning. The Yankees managed to tie the game in the ninth inning before ultimately falling in extras.
