Boston Red Sox CEO Sam Kennedy has definitively stated that owner John Henry and his family have no plans to sell the Major League Baseball franchise. Speaking on WEEI's "The Greg Hill Show" on Thursday, Kennedy dismissed any lingering speculation about a potential sale, asserting that the Henrys are "never selling the Boston Red Sox."
"It doesn’t matter, and I mean that sincerely," Kennedy said when asked about the possibility of a sale. "John Henry, Linda Henry, the Henry family are never selling the Boston Red Sox. And that’s a soundbite you can play forevermore. I’d bet anything on that."
This assertion comes amidst recent high-profile transactions in sports ownership, including the Yankees' $2.6 billion financing deal with Apollo Sports Capital and the $12.5 billion sale of the Lakers to Josh Kushner and Bob Iger. The Boston Red Sox are currently valued at an estimated $6.65 billion by Sportico.
Despite past fan chants of "Sell the team," particularly earlier in the season following a historically poor start, the Red Sox have since improved their performance and currently hold an American League wild-card spot. Kennedy indicated that the club's focus remains on on-field performance rather than ownership changes.
"Inside of Fenway Sports Group, we have 25, 30 investors of all types, all different types," Kennedy explained. "But John and Linda Henry, Tom Werner, Mike Gordon are the investors and owners of the club that run the club, and that has been consistent for 25 years, and I would bet for the next 25 years — at least 25 years, if not longer — that will continue."
