Red Bull Upgrade Ignites F1 Season, Verstappen Dominates Malaysian Grand Prix Qualifying

Max Verstappen captured his first pole position of the 2026 Formula 1 season at the Malaysian Grand Prix, signaling a significant turnaround for Red Bull. Verstappen's performance on the Sepang track, marked by a nearly 0.3-second advantage over second-place qualifier Lewis Hamilton, has injected new excitement into the season.

Verstappen has expressed optimism about the team's progress, particularly after the introduction of a new floor upgrade. "It's been an incredible result for us," Verstappen stated. "Looking at the season, how it started for us and the progression that we have made. At some tracks we were kind of close, but now I think this weekend it was very positive for us."

Red Bull's journey this season began with the car being notably slower than its competitors. However, a series of upgrades, culminating in the new floor, has transformed their competitiveness. "We have been adding bits to the car and they have worked," Verstappen explained. "It's simple as that. When they work, you gain lap time, you have a better overall balance in the car."

This performance boost comes after Verstappen signed a contract extension with Red Bull over the summer break, demonstrating his belief in the team's potential to overcome early-season challenges. He arrived in Malaysia following three consecutive podium finishes, with Red Bull aiming to validate the efficacy of their recent upgrades.

Teammate Isack Hadjar, returning after a wrist injury, also noted the car's improved performance. "I jumped in a car that's way better than when I left it in Budapest," Hadjar said. "The last two weekends have been surprising."

Despite Hadjar's strong qualifying performance, he will start eighth due to a grid penalty for exceeding his engine part allocation. This promotes Lewis Hamilton to the front row alongside Verstappen, reviving memories of their past title rivalries.

Mercedes, meanwhile, is evaluating the impact of their own aerodynamic upgrade. The team has faced challenges in developing their car this season, with questions arising about whether their new package is performing as expected, especially in the challenging conditions of Sepang, characterized by high temperatures and a demanding track surface.

Lewis Hamilton acknowledged the challenge posed by Verstappen and the upgraded Red Bull. "At nearly 0.3 seconds slower in qualifying, and with the pace Verstappen has shown all weekend, Hamilton's mindset on Saturday was to 'just try my best to hold on to him tomorrow'," the report noted. "Even Lewis Hamilton, starting from his equal best grid position of the year in second place, fears Max Verstappen will be tough to beat."

Drivers anticipate a race heavily influenced by tyre degradation due to the heat. Strategy, including the potential for an "undercut"—pitting early to gain an advantage on fresh tires—is expected to be crucial. "Track position is going to be very important. Strategy is going to be really important," said one Mercedes driver. "It's a race where we will attack."
