Jake Whisenant, a climber celebrated for setting a speed record on Yosemite's El Capitan, has died at the age of 30. The Tulare County Sheriff's Office confirmed that Whisenant died in an accident on August 3 in the Sierra Nevada. Details surrounding the accident have not been released.
Whisenant, who was from Mammoth Lakes, California, gained significant recognition in October 2024. Alongside climbing partner Brant Hysell, he ascended the Lurking Fear route on El Capitan in an astonishing two hours, 55 minutes, and 32 seconds. This feat surpassed the previous record by nearly 10 minutes.
At the time of the record-breaking climb, Whisenant described it as "a truly magical day" where he and Hysell entered a "flow state." He noted the perfect weather conditions and the solitude of the route.
Whisenant frequently documented his climbing adventures on Instagram. His posts included recent ascents in the Sierra Nevada as of July 15. Fellow climbers have shared tributes, including Noah Fox, who climbed El Capitan with Whisenant in May and called the experiences "memories I will cherish for the rest of my life."
Bailee Moore, who identified herself as Whisenant's "lifelong friend," expressed the profound devastation of his family. "Our family is absolutely devastated by this news but find solace in the fact that Jake died doing what he loves in the beautiful Sierra Nevada," Moore wrote on social media.
El Capitan, a prominent granite monolith in Yosemite National Park, rises 3,000 feet and is known for its sheer vertical face.
