Real Madrid Apologizes to China Over Mbappe Meme Controversy

Real Madrid has issued a formal apology to China following backlash over comments made by player Kylian Mbappe. The controversy began when Mbappe laughed at a meme featuring his face superimposed on an image of Mao Zedong during an interview.

Initially, Real Madrid defended Mbappe, stating he had no intent to offend and emphasizing players' freedom of expression. This stance was met with criticism, particularly from Chinese state-run media.

State-run CCTV announced it would stop broadcasting La Liga matches in China until an apology was issued. La Liga itself had already released a public apology, clarifying that Mbappe's comments did not represent the league. Mbappe subsequently issued his own apology, acknowledging that his remarks had caused hurt.

Pressure from Chinese state-run media, including CCTV's statement that it "did not accept this attitude" from Real Madrid, led the club to reverse its position. Shortly after CCTV's demand, Real Madrid released its apology.

"Real Madrid C.F. wishes to apologize to the Chinese people for any distress that may have been caused by the recent remarks made by our player, Kylian Mbappé," the club stated. "Our club holds deep respect for China — its history, its culture, and its citizens—as well as for the millions of Chinese fans who feel affection and admiration for Real Madrid."

The incident highlights the sensitivity surrounding public figures' actions and statements in international markets, particularly in China. The club's swift apology underscores the significant commercial implications of offending major sponsors and broadcasting partners in the Chinese market.
