Rays Shut Out Yankees 1-0 in ALDS Game 1

The Tampa Bay Rays took a 1-0 lead in their American League Division Series matchup against the New York Yankees with a narrow 1-0 victory in Game 1 on Saturday night. The Yankees' offense was stymied throughout the game, managing only a single hit.

That hit came in the eighth inning when Austin Wells doubled down the right-field line, breaking up Rays pitcher Drew Rasmussen's no-hitter with two outs. However, Wells was thrown out at third base as he attempted to stretch the hit into a triple. This ended the Yankees' most significant scoring opportunity and allowed Rasmussen to exit the game having completed eight scoreless innings.

Rasmussen was dominant, limiting the Yankees to one hit and two walks while striking out 10 batters on 101 pitches. He continued his success against the Yankees, having nearly thrown a no-hitter against them late in the regular season.

Bryan Baker took over for Rasmussen in the ninth inning and quickly retired the Yankees. He struck out Giancarlo Stanton and Ben Rice before inducing a groundout from Cody Bellinger, completing a combined one-hitter and securing the win for Tampa Bay.

The lone run of the game came in the third inning when Jonathan Aranda hit a 417-foot home run off Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole. Cole pitched five innings, allowing one run on five hits and one walk while striking out five batters. The Yankees' bullpen, including Ryan Weathers, Paul Blackburn, and Brent Headrick, held Tampa Bay hitless over the final three innings, but the offense could not capitalize.

The Yankees were without captain Aaron Judge, who was not on the ALDS roster as he recovers from a calf strain. The best-of-five series continues Monday night at Tropicana Field, with Cam Schlittler expected to start Game 2 for the Yankees.
