The Baltimore Ravens have waived rookie quarterback Diego Pavia, a Heisman Trophy finalist, just days before the start of training camp. The move leaves the former Vanderbilt star searching for a new opportunity in the NFL. Pavia was signed by the Ravens as an undrafted free agent following a standout collegiate season in 2025, during which he led Vanderbilt to a 10-3 record, their first double-digit win season. He was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, college football's most prestigious individual award. He also garnered numerous accolades, including first-team All-American honors, SEC Offensive Player of the Year, and the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.

Pavia competed for the No. 3 quarterback spot on the Ravens' depth chart during spring practices. The team has since narrowed its options for that position to veteran Skylar Thompson and fellow undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano. The decision to waive Pavia was made to accommodate the signing of veteran center Ethan Pocic. The Ravens' quarterback room remains crowded, with Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley atop the depth chart. New Ravens head coach Jesse Minter had previously described Pavia as a "force multiplier" and emphasized that his opportunity with Baltimore offered a "clean slate." Minter stated that any undrafted rookie would be evaluated based on their performance and actions on the field. Pavia became the first Heisman finalist in history not to be drafted. He faced some scrutiny during the pre-draft process regarding his height and drew criticism for a social media post after not winning the Heisman, for which he later apologized.
