Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice described his recent 30-day jail sentence as a "reality check" and a "learning experience" in his first public comments on the matter. Rice began serving his time on May 19 after prosecutors alleged he tested positive for THC, violating the terms of his probation stemming from a 2024 high-speed car crash.

Rice was released on June 16, having missed the Chiefs' mandatory OTA minicamp. He stated that the experience was mentally challenging but that he was able to maintain his focus by communicating with teammates and his athletic trainer, and by watching comedy shows.

The incident originated from a March 2024 collision on a Dallas highway where Rice, then 26, was accused of driving a Lamborghini Urus at speeds exceeding 100 mph. The crash resulted in injuries to several people, and Rice subsequently pleaded guilty to two felony charges: racing on a highway causing bodily injury and collision involving serious bodily injury. He was sentenced to five years of probation and ordered to pay over $114,000 in restitution to the victims. The NFL also suspended Rice for six games for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.

Rice also addressed undergoing knee surgery shortly before his jail sentence, stating it was scheduled to address inflammation that affected him during the 2025 season. He received permission from a judge to undergo physical therapy at Parkland Hospital during his incarceration, focusing on stretching, activation, conditioning, and stamina.

Rice, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract, recorded 571 receiving yards and five touchdowns in eight games during the 2025 season. Head coach Andy Reid has not yet indicated whether Rice will participate in the Chiefs' preseason opener against the Rams.
