Rangers Goalie Shesterkin Injured in Loss to Capitals
Star netminder leaves game with apparent lower-body injury, raising concerns for the Eastern Conference-leading Rangers.
New York Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin exited Friday night's game against the Washington Capitals with what appeared to be a lower-body injury and was helped off the ice by teammates.
The Vezina Trophy winner from the 2021-22 season sustained the injury during a net-mouth scramble in the second period, jamming his right leg awkwardly against the post. He was unable to put weight on his leg and did not return to the game.
Shesterkin, who has been a key player for the Rangers' strong start to the season, had a 3-1 record with a .926 save percentage and a 1.75 goals-against average entering Friday's contest. He even scored a goal on Oct. 1.
With Shesterkin out, Dylan Garand entered the game in relief. Garand had limited NHL experience with only four previous games on his resume. Despite his efforts, Boone Jenner scored late in the second period, which proved to be the game-winning goal for the Capitals.
The injury to Shesterkin raises concerns for the Rangers, who currently lead the Eastern Conference. The team will await further evaluation to determine the severity of the injury.
