Rangers Goalie Dylan Garand Steps Up Amidst Injuries

Rookie goaltender Dylan Garand has quickly become a crucial player for the New York Rangers, stepping into a starting role following injuries to both primary goalies. Garand, who was placed on waivers just weeks prior, now leads NHL goaltenders with at least three appearances in goals against average and save percentage.

Garand's unexpected opportunity arose after a series of events shifted the team's goaltending depth chart. He lost the backup competition to Joonas Korpisalo at the start of the season and was subsequently placed on waivers by the Rangers. However, Korpisalo sustained a lower-body injury before the second game of the season, leading to Garand's recall.

The situation further escalated when starting goalie Igor Shesterkin suffered a season-ending knee injury. "The circumstance of why is not great," Garand's longtime goaltending coach Dan De Palma commented on the series of injuries, acknowledging the unfortunate nature of the opportunities.

Before these events, Garand had entered the summer as the frontrunner to back up Shesterkin. Despite losing that initial competition, his coach, De Palma, stressed the importance of continuous focus and trust in the process. Garand himself was reportedly content with another season in the AHL with the Hartford Wolf Pack.

However, Garand's performance since stepping into the crease has quelled any concerns about the team's ability to withstand the absence of Shesterkin. Entering play on Wednesday, Garand posted a 1.15 goals against average and a .951 save percentage. His emergence has also served as a reminder of how precarious the Rangers' goaltending situation could have been had another team claimed him off waivers.
