Las Vegas Raiders rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza experienced significant growing pains in his second NFL preseason game against the Houston Texans, throwing an interception that was returned for an 80-yard touchdown. The pick-six occurred on Mendoza's second pass attempt of the game.
Mendoza, the Raiders' first-round draft pick, had a less successful outing compared to his NFL debut the previous week against the Arizona Cardinals. In that game, he completed 10 of 16 passes for 97 yards and a touchdown, without throwing an interception. Against the Texans, he finished with 8 completions on 15 attempts, resulting in a passer rating of 42.6.
Teammates, including veteran Maxx Crosby, offered encouragement to the young quarterback on the sideline. "Yeah, that's football, you know? It's not gonna be perfect, you know?" Crosby told ESPN. "He's a rookie. You got to go through, you know, some ups and downs as part of the game, and it's how you respond."
Analyst Troy Aikman, a former No. 1 overall pick himself, commented on the difficulty for rookie quarterbacks adjusting to the NFL. "Part of what [Mendoza] will learn as he moves through this game tonight... is that the relationship between defender and receiver is a lot tighter than what it was in college," Aikman said. "And these guys are that much quicker, and that goes on the inside of the field when they play the ball, as well as on the outside."
Mendoza's performance highlighted the learning curve for first-year players transitioning to the professional level, where defensive speed and anticipation are significantly higher than in college.
