Las Vegas Raiders rookie wide receiver Malik Benson has been a standout performer in the team's training camp, drawing praise from veteran tight end Michael Mayer and head coach Klint Kubiak.
Mayer described Benson as "one of my guys," highlighting his strong hands and quickness. "He's moving up, you know? He was in there with us for two-minute [drills] today, and I love when he's in there with me," Mayer said. He added that Benson is communicative, works hard, and that he feels comfortable when Benson lines up at receiver, indicating trust.
Benson's contributions extend beyond offense. He has been working with Mayer on special teams, fielding punts. "He's just a young man that's coming here ready to compete for a job," Kubiak noted. "And when a guy can make plays on offense and then be a core teams player, that says a lot to his teammates about what he's made out of."
The Raiders selected Benson in the sixth round of the NFL Draft in April. He transferred to Alabama in 2023 before moving to two other college programs. In his senior year at Oregon last season, Benson recorded 43 receptions for 719 yards and six touchdowns in 15 games. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound receiver is known for his explosiveness and ability to stretch the field.
During his time at Oregon, Benson showcased his big-play ability. In a game against Washington, he caught a 64-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Dante Moore, helping the Ducks secure a 26-14 victory. Benson is now looking to translate his college success to the professional level as he competes for a role in the Raiders' wide receiver group.
