The Las Vegas Raiders have named veteran Kirk Cousins as their starting quarterback for the upcoming 2026 NFL season, with highly touted rookie Fernando Mendoza set to begin his NFL career as a backup. The decision was confirmed by new head coach Klint Kubiak on Tuesday ahead of the team's first training camp.
"When we go out to practice tomorrow, Kirk Cousins the starting quarterback. He's the guy," Kubiak told reporters. "He's gonna get a ton of reps. He deserves it. He's played really good football."
There is significant anticipation surrounding Mendoza, who led the Indiana Hoosiers to a National Championship in the college game last season and was selected with the first overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. However, Kubiak indicated that this is part of a long-term strategy for the Raiders.
Mendoza, along with fellow quarterback Aidan O'Connell, is expected to push Cousins. "I want Fernando and I want Aidan (O'Connell) to push him. It's important for me to be fair to the players and put the best player out there," Kubiak stated.
The Raiders are aiming to rebound after a disappointing 2025 season, which saw them finish with the league's worst record. Following an overhaul that included minority owner Tom Brady, the team has higher ambitions for the current season.
Cousins, 37, is guaranteed $20 million for 2026, while Mendoza recently signed a four-year, $57.27 million fully guaranteed rookie contract. The Raiders organization has emphasized Mendoza's development under Cousins' experienced guidance.
The Raiders have made several notable additions to their roster in the offseason. Center Tyler Linderbaum joined from the Baltimore Ravens, signing an $81 million deal. The team also retained star defensive end Maxx Crosby, after a potential trade to the Ravens fell through due to concerns over Crosby's recovery from a minor knee procedure.

Kubiak, who impressed as the offensive coordinator for the Super Bowl-winning Seattle Seahawks last year, expressed optimism about the team's potential. The Raiders will open their season against the Miami Dolphins in Las Vegas on September 13, with Cousins leading the offense.
