Raiders Coach Backs Veteran Quarterback Despite Rookie's Potential

Las Vegas Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak has once again stated his support for veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins, choosing him to start Sunday's game against the New York Jets despite the team's current four-game losing streak and the presence of top draft pick Fernando Mendoza.

The Raiders, who began the season with three consecutive wins, have since fallen to a 3-4 record after losses to the Los Angeles Rams, Buffalo Bills, New England Patriots, and Kansas City Chiefs. The team's recent struggles have fueled calls for Mendoza, the No. 1 overall selection in this year's NFL Draft, to take over the starting role.

Mendoza, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner who led Indiana to a national championship last season, has seen limited action this year, making his NFL debut in Week 5 against the Patriots where he completed six of eight passes for 48 yards.

Despite the mounting pressure, Kubiak emphasized his confidence in Cousins, a 38-year-old former quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings and Atlanta Falcons. "There is no controversy there," Kubiak stated. "He's playing at a very high level. He's gotta continue to do that for us to win and we gotta keep helping all the areas around him. Excited for him to go play against the Jets."

Kubiak acknowledged that Mendoza is expected to play "at some point" but indicated that the team is currently focused on remaining in playoff contention. "Kirk is playing really well, and we're in the hunt," Kubiak said. "It's really important that we keep playing really well behind him and keep developing Fernando."

Cousins' performance in Sunday's 35-21 loss to the Rams saw him complete 26 of 44 passes for 295 yards and two touchdowns. He currently leads the NFL in touchdown passes with 16 and ranks third in passing yards with 1,877.
