Emma Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion, has announced she will miss the upcoming tournament as she continues her recovery from a stress fracture in her right lower leg. The injury, sustained during the grass-court season, also led to her withdrawal from Wimbledon.
The decision was made after consultations with her medical team. Raducanu had recently been seen on court wearing a protective boot. The US Open is scheduled to begin on August 23.
This latest setback follows a frustrating 12 months for the British number one, marked by persistent physical issues. A foot injury disrupted her pre-season training, and she was sidelined for two and a half months with a post-viral illness earlier in the year.
Raducanu returned to the court for the latter part of the clay-court season and rehired Andrew Richardson, the coach who guided her to her 2021 US Open title. However, their time practicing together has been limited. In June, she reached her first final since her New York triumph at Queen's Club, but she has not competed since that event.
