Professional wrestler Andy “The Butcher” Williams died Friday at the age of 48 after collapsing in the ring during a tag-team match. Williams was participating in a match with his longtime tag-team partner Jesse “The Blade” Guilmette at Mr. Small’s Theater in Millvale, Pennsylvania, when he suffered a medical episode.
Paramedics entered the ring after it became clear Williams was in distress and administered CPR. He was then transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to a representative for Love Wrestling, an organization based in Pittsburgh. The rest of the event was canceled following the incident.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic but coordinated, with event staff, paramedics, and the crowd working together to clear a path and provide immediate medical assistance, including chest compressions and the use of a defibrillator. Officials have not yet released the official cause of Williams’ death.
Beyond his wrestling career, Williams was also known as the rhythm guitarist for the Grammy-nominated heavy-metal band Every Time I Die.
