Anastasia Potapova has responded to accusations that her post-match wave after defeating Amanda Anisimova at the US Open was disrespectful. Speculation arose on social media that Potapova's gesture was a sarcastic "bye bye" directed at Anisimova as she walked off the court.
Potapova, who represents Austria, took to her Instagram story to clarify the situation. "I see so many questions about my bye wave after the match," Potapova wrote. "You just wanna make a circus out of everything. I waved to my friend, who’s been sitting there and supporting me. Just be easier guys, but I guess haters gonna hate."
The incident occurred following Potapova's 6-2, 7-5 victory over American Anisimova in the third round of the tournament. Video footage showed Potapova waving as Anisimova passed by her.
Some viewers interpreted the wave as unsportsmanlike conduct, with comments on social media suggesting a lack of respect. However, many others defended Potapova, pointing out that she appeared to be looking towards the stands and that Anisimova was already walking away.
Potapova, currently ranked world No. 24, advanced to the fourth round of the US Open, where she faced Mirra Andreeva. A quarterfinal appearance would mark a career-best Grand Slam achievement for the 25-year-old, who also reached the fourth round at Roland Garros earlier in the year.
