The Pittsburgh Pirates released Marcell Ozuna on Wednesday, seeking to bolster their lineup as they pursue a National League Wild Card spot. Ozuna, who signed a one-year, $12 million contract with the Pirates in February, had fallen out of favor with the team due to his performance this season.
Ozuna's struggles were highlighted by a .203 batting average through 251 at-bats, with just eight home runs. This marks a significant drop from his previous seasons, where he was known as a power hitter capable of multiple 100-plus RBI performances. In July, he hit .216 over 37 at-bats and had recently been batting sixth in the order after starting the season as the cleanup hitter.
The Pirates have instead turned to rookie sensation Esmerlyn Valdez, who has made a substantial impact since his promotion. Valdez has hit 14 home runs in 150 at-bats, becoming a key offensive contributor.
With the Pirates 3 1/2 games behind the last Wild Card position, the team also made other moves at the trade deadline, acquiring reliever Luke Weaver and Camilo Doval. Ozuna is likely to clear waivers, as other teams may be hesitant to take on the remainder of his contract. His release leaves his Major League Baseball future uncertain.
