Tom Pidcock stated he wanted to "stop racing" after two of his Pinarello-Q36.5 teammates were hit by a police vehicle traveling against the course direction at the Tre Valli Varesine one-day race in Italy. The incident occurred with six laps remaining in the race.

Marcel Camprubi, from Spain, was able to continue after the collision. However, fellow Briton Thomas Gloag stopped racing and required stitches for a knee injury. "I was mad. I had guys all riding in front of me, for me, and then two of them are on the floor," Pidcock told Eurosport. "This shouldn't happen. But we continued and got back into the race and I'm happy that I could be on the podium."

Pidcock finished the race in second place, with Belgium's Jarno Widar winning in a sprint finish. BBC Sport has contacted race organizers and local police for comment.

This incident brings to mind a previous tragedy in August, when two-time Olympic mountain bike champion Pidcock dedicated his second cross-country world title to British cyclist Finlay Tarling. Tarling, 19, died on August 14 during the Volta a Portugal after a high-speed collision with a van that had entered the closed road.

Following the incident in Italy, Camprubi shared a picture of a damaged bicycle on Instagram Stories, writing, "Sad that you have to risk your life to race, one month after a tragic accident."
