Welsh Fire captain Phil Salt has expressed a desire for The Hundred competition to be extended by approximately one week. His comments come after his team played three matches in a compressed five-day period, highlighting the physical demands on players.

"It's been a little bit hectic the last few days," Salt told BBC Sport. "Birmingham, back to Cardiff, up here. It's a lot to be honest with you in five days and managing bodies through."

Salt, whose second-placed side secured victories against Birmingham Phoenix and Southern Brave before a loss to Manchester Super Giants, stated, "From a player's point of view I'd like this competition to be probably a week longer."

The current Hundred group stage spans 23 days, with each team playing eight matches. This contrasts with other major T20 leagues, such as the Indian Premier League, where teams play 14 group games over 56 days, and Australia's Big Bash League, which featured 10 group games per team in a 36-day window last season.

Since its inception in 2021, The Hundred has been criticized for contributing to an already crowded English cricket schedule. The Professional Cricketers Association (PCA) has previously raised concerns about player welfare.

Following the announcement of the 2026 schedule, which saw the T20 Blast reduced by two matches, PCA chief executive Daryl Mitchell noted that an unchanged County Championship season, combined with other fixtures, "does raise concerns with player burnout with mental and physical dangers attached to an overly intense end to the season following the conclusion of The Hundred."

Salt acknowledged the complexities of adjusting the schedule but emphasized the impact on his squad, including international players like Marco Jansen and Lockie Ferguson. "They've done a lot of time on the bus in the last three days! A bus that's not built for lads that size," he said.

"I'd like a bit more time in between to be honest with you, but I understand we're working with a pretty tight schedule already as it is," Salt added. "I'm not the man for the answer on the schedule, I just like to magic another week of the year somewhere!"

Welsh Fire is scheduled to play at Headingley on Sunday against Sunrisers Leeds, followed by their final group game at home against London Spirit next Wednesday.
