Phil Mickelson Entered Treatment Facility for Addiction, Representative Says

LIV Golf competitor Phil Mickelson recently entered and has since departed a treatment facility for family trauma and addiction, a representative confirmed. The nature of the addiction and the length of his stay were not specified.

Mickelson, 56, has participated in only one LIV Golf event this year, which was in South Africa in March. He withdrew from the Masters in April and later pulled out of the PGA Championship, citing a need to step away for an extended period due to a personal family health matter.

Prior Discussion of Gambling Addiction

Mickelson has previously spoken about struggling with gambling addiction. In September 2023, he stated that he would abstain from betting on football for that season, having moved from moderation to addiction. He acknowledged that his gambling had negatively impacted his relationships and credited his wife, Amy, for her support during his recovery. Mickelson described undergoing professional help over several years to address the harm caused.

A month prior to that statement, Mickelson addressed allegations about his betting habits, which were detailed in a book by Billy Walters. He denied betting on the Ryder Cup and indicated that therapy had been beneficial.

The representative's recent statement did not indicate whether Mickelson's current treatment was related to gambling.

Previous Allegations and Statements

In June, Golf Digest reported that a female employee at The Farms Golf Club near San Diego accused Mickelson of inappropriate physical contact. The club conducted an investigation and confirmed Mickelson was no longer a member, though his attorney stated Mickelson had resigned.

Responding to a report about alleged misconduct in late June, a spokesperson for Mickelson told PEOPLE that some claims were false, while others concerned past mistakes that Mickelson had already acknowledged. The spokesperson added that Mickelson's priority is to be the husband and father his family deserves.
