Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden spent time away from World Cup preparations at Wimbledon on Saturday, where he was seen in the Royal Box alongside former England manager Gareth Southgate.
Foden was not selected by current England manager Thomas Tuchel for the upcoming World Cup after an inconsistent season with his club, where he scored seven league goals. He attended the tournament with his partner, Rebecca Cooke.
Southgate, who previously managed Foden and faced criticism for the player's role in his system, was also present. Foden has previously spoken about his frustration with being played out of position during Euro 2024 under Southgate.
"I feel frustrated I didn’t get out what I wanted to get out of it," Foden told the Manchester Evening News last year. "The position I was put in on the left was very difficult to influence the game."
They were among a number of notable guests at Wimbledon, including Dutch footballer Marco van Basten and England Lionesses players Michelle Agyemang, Ella Toone, and Alex Greenwood. Winter Olympians Tabitha Stoecker and Matthew Weston were also in attendance.
Southgate is missing his first major tournament since 2018 following the appointment of Thomas Tuchel as the new England manager. Other guests included tennis legend Martina Navratilova, cyclist Sir Chris Hoy, and multiple Olympians and Paralympians.
Wimbledon's middle Saturday traditionally hosts many sporting figures in the Royal Box. Past attendees have included tennis champions, Olympians, and Paralympians.
