Phil Foden Resurgent in Manchester City's Champions League Victory

Phil Foden delivered a commanding man-of-the-match performance in Manchester City's Champions League match against AEK Athens, a display that highlighted the player's significant talent after a period of underperformance.

Foden acknowledged that he had not reached his expected heights in the previous two seasons. His exclusion from the England squad for last summer's World Cup did not aid his progress, but he expressed enthusiasm for a "fresh start" under new manager Enzo Maresca at the beginning of the current season. This fresh start had been slow to materialize until recently, with a notable low point being his red card in the derby against Manchester United in September. However, he ignited his form with a goal against Ipswich Town on Saturday, his first Premier League strike in ten months. This was followed by a superb hat-trick in the 5-1 demolition of AEK Athens at the Etihad Stadium.

"I enjoyed that a lot," Foden told TNT Sports. "The lads were great again. We showed determination again. I am a forward so I have to keep scoring and helping the team. It is good for my confidence." When asked about his return to form, he stated, "Slowly, but surely. Still got a long way to go, but I am going in the right direction. Scoring along the way definitely helps." He added, "I want to keep working hard and keep being the best I can for the manager and the team."

Maresca took the opportunity to make eight changes from the team that defeated Ipswich, with Foden, Gianluigi Donnarumma, and Ruben Dias being the retained players. Striker Erling Haaland was included in the squad but was rested due to a foot injury sustained in the previous match. This provided Maresca with the chance to test his notion that Foden could provide an "solution" in the false nine position. Although Foden began on the right flank, he later moved into the central attacking role, a switch he said he "really enjoyed."

Despite a brief scare at the start of the second half when AEK Athens narrowed the deficit to 2-1, Manchester City extended their lead. Foden's performance made him the third Englishman to score a hat-trick and provide an assist in a Champions League match, joining Wayne Rooney and former teammate Raheem Sterling.

Joleon Lescott, a former City defender, described Foden's play as "Beautiful." He suggested that Foden had convinced his manager that he could effectively play as the number nine if Haaland were unavailable.

Foden scored 19 goals during Manchester City's 2023-24 Premier League title-winning campaign and received the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year and the league's Player of the Season awards. Despite finishing the previous season without scoring in his last 31 club and international games, he signed a new four-year contract in July. Maresca expressed his satisfaction with Foden's contribution, stating, "I said since day one that I consider him one of the best English players." He acknowledged Foden's past struggles but emphasized his value to the team, aiming to help him reach his peak condition.
