Pembroke Cricket Club is nearing what could be one of the most successful seasons in Irish sporting history, with its sights set on winning five major titles. The club, located in Dublin 4, has invested in its facilities and player development, creating an environment that attracts and nurtures top talent.
The Pembroke men's first team boasts seven players who have represented Ireland in the last nine months: Andrew Balbirnie, Lorcan Tucker, Tim and Harry Tector, Gavin Hoey, Barry McCarthy, and Josh Little. Byron McDonough is also poised to make his international debut. Two other players have earned 'A' caps, and four have competed in senior interprovincial matches. The team's overseas professional, Addison Sherriff, has been the leading run-scorer in the province this season.
This concentration of talent is partly attributed to a strategic decision a decade ago to blood young players. This approach allowed future stars like Little, JJ Garth, and Lorcan Tucker to gain valuable senior experience early in their careers. The club also benefited when neighbours YMCA closed two years ago, leading to players like the Tectors and Olly Riley joining Pembroke.
The women's section also features significant talent, including Orla Prendergast, considered Ireland's best player, and Kim Garth, who recently won a T20 World Cup medal with Australia.
Pembroke has already secured the Leinster T20 Cup, defeating Leinster CC in the final, and will compete in the All-Ireland T20 semi-final. They are also set to play in the Evara All-Ireland 50-over final. Currently, the team leads the IBI Corporate Finance Premier League with five games remaining.
The club faces challenges in its pursuit of these titles. International fixtures often conflict with club commitments, forcing Pembroke to play without key players. Cricket Ireland's protocols also create selection dilemmas, particularly concerning players involved in the final match of the Afghanistan series and the subsequent club fixture.
Upcoming Challenges
Pembroke is scheduled to play a crucial CL Senior Cup final against a strong Leinster side. However, they will be without Test captain Balbirnie, who is ineligible, and the injured McCarthy and Little. Further absences are expected due to the upcoming series against Afghanistan.
Leinster is led by Joey Carroll and features a formidable bowling attack, including Jai Moondra, regarded as the fastest bowler in the country. Other key players for Leinster include Mark Tonge, Bilal Azhar, Younas Ahmadzai, Monil Patel, and Gareth Delany.
The club is also concerned about retaining emerging talent. Young players like Daniel and Luke Murray, who have limited senior appearances, may seek opportunities elsewhere, prompting Pembroke to provide them with playing time when possible.
