Paul George Fined $2,000 for Flopping in Celtics Debut
The NBA issued a fine to the Celtics forward after a controversial play in their season-opening loss to the Pistons.
The NBA has fined Boston Celtics forward Paul George $2,000 for a flopping violation during the team's season-opening 121-113 loss to the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday. The league announced the penalty on Wednesday.
The infraction occurred in the fourth quarter with approximately three minutes remaining. George, pushing the ball in transition, made contact with Pistons guard Duncan Robinson and then dramatically fell to the court in an apparent attempt to draw a foul.
While on-court officials did not call a penalty at the time, the league office reviewed the play after the game and issued the fine. According to NBA regulations, postgame flopping penalties start at $2,000, with escalating penalties for repeat offenses. For George, who is in the first year of a significant contract, the fine is considered nominal.
The fine capped a strong individual performance for George in his Celtics debut. He scored 38 points on 12-of-21 shooting from the field, including 7-of-12 from three-point range. George also contributed five rebounds, five steals, and three assists in 31 minutes played. His 38 points set a new franchise record for points scored in a Celtics debut, surpassing Kristaps Porzingis' previous record.
Despite George's scoring outburst, the Celtics suffered a significant collapse in the fourth quarter. They squandered a 22-point lead, allowing Detroit to go on a 23-0 run. Jayson Tatum also struggled offensively, shooting 6-of-23 from the field.
The flopping fine does not carry a suspension, making George eligible to play in the Celtics' upcoming game on Friday against his former team, the Philadelphia 76ers.
