The New England Patriots have placed a historic contract offer on the table for cornerback Christian Gonzalez, which would make him the highest-paid player at his position in NFL history. Patriots owner Robert Kraft confirmed the team's intentions Saturday before training camp.
"We love Christian Gonzalez. We love him as a player, as a person, and that’s why we’ve made an offer to him to make him the highest-paid player to ever play that position in the NFL," Kraft said, according to ESPN. "And coincidentally, it is the highest contract in Patriots franchise history. So we’re glad we drafted him, he’s developed here, and we hope he’ll be with us for a long time."
Gonzalez, 24, earned Pro Bowl honors last season and was a key contributor to the Patriots' Super Bowl appearance. He is currently in the final two years of his rookie contract, with a team option for 2027. He is set to make a base salary of $2.259 million this season.
Head coach Mike Vrabel acknowledged the ongoing negotiations between the club and Gonzalez's agents. "Contract negotiations are ongoing between the club and his agents," Vrabel said. "I’m excited about having Christian back here with us and the impact that he can make on our football team, and I really enjoy the person, enjoy the player."
Gonzalez, the No. 17 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, was a full participant in practice on Saturday, a day marked by a reported handshake between the player and Kraft. This participation comes as many NFL players opt out of practice during contract disputes.
Quarterback Drake Maye expressed his confidence in Gonzalez, stating, "I think it shows his main focus, and that’s football. He’s the best corner in the league, in my opinion. He’s not the big rah-rah guy, he does it his own way, but he does it at the highest level. I’m glad to be his teammate."
The current benchmark for highest-paid cornerbacks in the league was set in March by Trent McDuffie of the Rams, who signed a four-year, $124 million deal with an average annual value of $31 million. If Gonzalez's reported offer materializes, it would surpass McDuffie's earnings.
The Patriots, who finished last season with a 14-3 record before losing in the Super Bowl, will open their upcoming season on September 9 in Seattle against the Seahawks in a rematch of their Super Bowl contest.
