Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is progressing well in his recovery from ACL surgery and is participating in training camp, according to head coach Andy Reid. Mahomes sustained the injury in Week 15 of the 2025 season against the Chargers and underwent surgery on December 15. He was cleared in time for the start of the Chiefs' training camp, which began last week, approximately seven months after the injury.

Reid described Mahomes' recovery as positive, stating that the quarterback is "doing everything that he normally does and is doing it well." Reid added that the team is "happy with that" and that Mahomes "sure looks sharp out here," while acknowledging that the quarterback is "still progressing through it."

Mahomes has set a goal for himself to be back to full in-game participation by Week 1 of the upcoming season. Reid indicated that the team will continue to monitor his progress and rely on medical guidance. "As long as he’s safe, that’s what we’re looking at," Reid said when asked about the possibility of Mahomes returning for Week 1.

Reid also noted uncertainty regarding Mahomes' participation in any preseason games, emphasizing that the team doctors will ultimately guide the decision-making process. The Chiefs' first preseason game is scheduled for August 15 against the Rams, and their 2026 regular season opener is set for September 14 on "Monday Night Football" against the Broncos.

In the 2025 season, Mahomes threw for 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, with 3,587 passing yards and a 62.7% completion rate. Despite a comparatively down year statistically through 14 starts, he achieved a career-high in rushing yards with 422 on 64 carries and scored five rushing touchdowns. The Chiefs missed the playoffs for the first time in 11 seasons following Mahomes' injury.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes participates during Kansas City Chiefs Training Camp at Missouri Western State University on July 25, 2026 in St Joseph, Missouri.
