Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been cleared to practice, signaling a positive step in his recovery from a torn ACL and LCL suffered last season. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid announced the clearance on Friday.
Mahomes sustained the injury in Week 15 against the Los Angeles Chargers on Dec. 14. He underwent surgery the following day and has since been engaged in an aggressive rehabilitation process. Just over seven months after the injury, Mahomes is on track to participate in the upcoming training camp.
The injury in December significantly impacted the Chiefs' 2025 season. The team missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014 following the Week 15 loss, and Mahomes' availability for the season opener against the Denver Broncos was initially uncertain. However, his expedited recovery now suggests he could be a full participant early in training camp and ready for the season opener.
The Chiefs organization is focused on rebuilding around Mahomes, who signed a contract extension keeping him with the team through 2033. Veteran tight end Travis Kelce remains a key player, and the team has also added Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III to bolster the offense and support Mahomes as he returns.
Before his injury last season, Mahomes completed 3,587 passing yards, with 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 14 games.
