Paraguay has advanced to the round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stunning four-time champions Germany in a 4-3 penalty shootout victory on Monday. The match was decided after a controversial Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review annulled a potential game-winning header for Germany in extra time, following a 1-1 draw through regulation and 30 minutes of added play.

Germany had appeared to take the lead in extra time when Jonathan Tah scored on a corner kick. However, the goal was disallowed after the referee reviewed footage showing that Germany's Waldemar Anton may have obstructed Paraguay's goalkeeper, Orlando Gill.

Match Progression

Germany dominated much of the match, but Paraguay took an unexpected lead in the 42nd minute when Julio Enciso headed in a goal. Germany equalized in the 54th minute with a header from Kai Havertz. Despite numerous chances for Germany throughout the remainder of regulation and extra time, neither team could find the back of the net again.

The penalty shootout saw early misses from both sides. Germany's Kai Havertz had his initial attempt saved by Gill, but Paraguay's Maurício also missed his team's fourth penalty. The shootout continued until Germany's Tah sent his attempt over the crossbar, opening the door for Paraguay. José Canale then secured the victory for Paraguay, sending his shot under the crossbar while Manuel Neuer went the wrong way.

This marks the first time Germany has lost a penalty shootout in World Cup history. The decision to disallow Tah's header is expected to be a significant point of discussion following Germany's exit from the tournament.

Paraguay now awaits the winner of the upcoming match between France and Sweden to determine their next opponent in the round of 16.
