Panthers Captain Aleksander Barkov Leaves Game With Apparent Leg Injury

Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov exited a game against the San Jose Sharks in the second period with an apparent leg injury. Barkov was seen making his way down the tunnel and into the locker room after an awkward fall.

While Barkov was able to skate and walk on his own, there are concerns the injury could be serious. A South Florida doctor familiar with hockey injuries suggested on social media that an ACL tear remains a possibility. This injury comes after Barkov missed the entire previous season due to an ACL tear.

Panthers coach Paul Maurice could not confirm the severity of the injury in his postgame press conference. The team ultimately lost the game in overtime after rallying from a three-goal deficit.

Last season, a significant injury to Barkov, sustained during training camp, contributed to the Panthers missing the playoffs for the first time since 2019, despite being considered Stanley Cup favorites. The team experienced a rash of injuries to other key players in addition to their captain.

If Barkov faces an extended absence, the Panthers may need to adjust their lineup. Players like Sam Bennett or Anton Lundell could potentially fill his role as the top-line center. Speculation has also arisen regarding the team's potential to pursue a trade for Dylan Larkin from the Detroit Red Wings, which might require placing Barkov on long-term injured reserve for salary cap relief.
