Chelsea mounted a remarkable comeback to defeat Leeds United 6-3 in a chaotic Carabao Cup tie at Stamford Bridge. The home side were two goals down at halftime before a second-half onslaught, spearheaded by Cole Palmer, secured their place in the fourth round.
Leeds took a deserved lead in the first half through a Tarik Muharemovic header from a corner. Their aggression and competitive edge were evident throughout the opening period, with Chelsea's youthful squad struggling to match the intensity. The visitors extended their lead early in the second half when Brenden Aaronson finished a swift counter-attack.
However, the complexion of the match changed dramatically after a penalty was awarded for minimal contact on Pep Chavarria. Cole Palmer calmly converted the spot-kick to pull Chelsea back into the game. Two minutes later, Palmer scored a superb second goal, curling an exquisite left-footed shot into the bottom corner to level the score at 2-2.
Stamford Bridge erupted as the momentum shifted. Pedro Neto then put Chelsea ahead with a finish similar to Palmer's second. Danny Welbeck added a fourth, marking his first goal for the club. Despite Leeds pulling a goal back through Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Chelsea responded strongly.
Valentin Barco scored the fifth goal to put Chelsea in a commanding position. Welbeck then added his second, deflecting a shot from Barco, to seal Chelsea's progression to the next round. The defensive frailties were evident for Chelsea, who have now conceded 10 goals in their first five matches of the season.
The match also saw a debut for 16-year-old midfielder Reggie Watson, who became the club's fourth youngest player. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso made significant changes to his lineup, including handing Watson his first start.
