Padres Make MLB History in Wild-Card Sweep of Cubs

The San Diego Padres completed a wild-card series sweep of the Chicago Cubs with a 4-1 victory on Wednesday night, achieving a historic pitching feat in the process. The Padres became the first team in Major League Baseball history to hold the league's highest-scoring offense during the regular season to a combined total of one run or none over a multi-game postseason series, according to OptaSTATS.

The Cubs' lineup, which led the majors in scoring during the regular season, managed only a single run throughout the two-game series. Key Cubs hitters, including Pete Crow-Armstrong and Alex Bregman, went a combined 0-for-15. Previously, the lowest run total for a regular-season scoring leader in a multi-game postseason series was three, set by the Orioles against the White Sox in the 1983 ALCS.

The Padres' pitching staff delivered a dominant performance against Chicago, allowing just one run over 18 innings with a 0.50 ERA, a 0.83 WHIP, eight hits allowed, and 19 strikeouts across the two games.

Following their sweep, the Padres celebrated in the clubhouse with new owners Kwanza Jones and Jose E. Feliciano. Their attention now turns to the National League Division Series. The Padres are scheduled to face the Milwaukee Brewers in Milwaukee, with Game 1 set to begin Saturday at American Family Field. The Brewers finished the regular season with the best record in the league, concluding their year with a 15-3 run.
