The San Diego Padres have acquired right-handed pitcher Casey Mize from the Detroit Tigers, according to multiple reports. This move comes just hours after the Padres agreed to a trade for pitcher Robbie Ray.
Mize, 29, was considered one of the top pitchers available before the trade deadline. This season, he has posted a 4-6 record with a 2.70 ERA, 85 strikeouts, and a 0.992 WHIP over 86 2/3 innings pitched in 16 starts. The Tigers will receive prospects Kash Mayfield and Jackson Wolf in the deal. San Diego will also acquire third baseman Gage Workman.
The Padres' pitching staff has been a point of focus, ranking 16th in ERA (4.14) and 18th in WHIP (1.32) this season. With a 58-54 record entering Monday, San Diego is 11 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West but is currently one game out of the final NL wild-card spot.
