Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's inability to secure a regular starting position at Celtic has underscored a recurring trend: the Scottish Premiership proving a difficult environment for high-profile former English Premier League players nearing the end of their careers. The 33-year-old midfielder, who joined Celtic in January with an impressive resume including domestic trophies and a Champions League win from spells at Southampton, Arsenal, and Liverpool, has struggled to establish himself at Parkhead.

Oxlade-Chamberlain's recent start in Celtic's 2-0 loss to Falkirk serves as a reminder of other prominent footballers who have found the Scottish top flight challenging.

Ian Wright, an Arsenal legend, joined Celtic in 1999. Despite a decorated career in England, he was past his prime at 35. His short tenure, marked by a significant Old Firm defeat and a Scottish Cup upset, ended with him seeking a move to Burnley. Wright later recounted facing abuse from some fans during his time in Glasgow.

Joey Barton arrived at Rangers in September 2016, aiming to replicate his English Premier League success. However, his time in Glasgow was brief and tumultuous. After just eight games and 133 days, his contract was cancelled following a training-ground altercation and a suspension. His tenure was notably overshadowed by a 5-1 Old Firm defeat.

Thomas Gravesen, a Danish midfielder known for his time at Real Madrid and Everton, joined Celtic in August 2006. While he scored against rivals Rangers, his performances did not consistently meet expectations. He struggled to maintain a regular place in the team and eventually returned to Everton on loan before retiring.

Aaron Ramsey, a multiple FA Cup winner with Arsenal and a Serie A champion with Juventus, joined Rangers on loan in January 2022. Despite initial excitement, fitness issues and limited impact characterized his spell. He is perhaps most remembered for missing a crucial penalty in the Europa League final shootout against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Juninho, a World Cup winner with Brazil and a Middlesbrough icon, signed for Celtic in 2004. Although he had a promising debut in an Old Firm derby, his form declined. He found it difficult to integrate into manager Martin O'Neill's tactics, particularly his wide-playing role with defensive duties, which did not suit his style. His contract was eventually terminated after seven months.

These instances illustrate that a stellar reputation forged in other leagues does not guarantee success in the demanding environment of Scottish football.
