The Old Hamptonians Cricket Club has been relegated from Division One to Division Two of their league for failing to meet the England and Wales Cricket Board's (ECB) tier-one club requirements, which mandate the inclusion of a girls' team and junior sections. The demotion, effective for the 2027 season, makes the club ineligible for promotion even if they win the league.

The club, largely composed of alumni from the independent Hampton School in south-west London, argued that it was nearly impossible to fulfill the requirements as the school has very few female students above the age of seven. Girls can attend Hampton's pre-prep school, but many transfer to the adjacent all-girls school, Lady Eleanor Holles.

The ECB requires tier-one clubs to have a girls' section, defined as at least one girls' team participating in fixtures, along with three hardball junior teams and a program for children aged five to 11. The Old Hamptonians, aware of these requirements for years, appealed the decision twice, first to the Surrey Cricket Foundation and then to the ECB, but both upheld the ruling.

A spokesperson for the Surrey Cricket Foundation stated that these requirements are crucial for ensuring cricket is accessible to all, encouraging high-performing clubs to create opportunities for both boys and girls. The ECB confirmed that these criteria are part of the conditions for receiving funding and are designed to promote strong, sustainable clubs, with support offered to clubs through local Recreational Cricket Boards for implementation. Clubs that did not comply by October 31, 2026, became ineligible for the top two divisions of ECB-accredited Premier Leagues.
