Ohtani to Remain in Dodgers' NLCS Lineup Despite Slump, Roberts Confirms
Manager Dave Roberts expressed confidence in the star designated hitter ahead of Game 3 against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has decided to keep Shohei Ohtani in the lineup for Game 3 of the National League Championship Series against the Milwaukee Brewers, despite the slugger's struggles at the plate during the postseason.
Ohtani has been serving as the designated hitter but has batted just .150 through the early games of the series. He has not recorded an extra-base hit or an RBI in the playoffs. His performance led Roberts to consider lineup changes after the Dodgers fell behind the Brewers two games to none.
However, Ohtani expressed his conviction that he is close to finding his swing and is well enough to contribute. "He’s adamant he feels good enough to be in there," Roberts told reporters, according to The New York Post. "He’s close to finding something with his swing. I feel great about it."
Roberts met with president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman and general manager Brandon Gomes before making the final decision. "He was very convicted that he is onto something mechanically," Roberts added. "He was adamant that he can help us, he’s well enough to help us win a baseball game. So, that’s all I needed to hear."
Ohtani acknowledged that his performance has been below his usual standards and takes "full responsibility." He has been dealing with left knee and right arm ailments that have affected him throughout the regular season, with his arm injury previously requiring an stint on the injured list.
Despite the slump, which includes not hitting a home run since Aug. 18, Roberts maintained his confidence in Ohtani. "My confidence in Ohtani has never wavered," Roberts said, emphasizing that the decision for Game 3 reflects that unwavering belief.
