Shohei Ohtani hit two home runs and had four hits to fuel the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 11-5 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Monday night. Following the game, Ohtani provided an update on his pitching recovery, stating he is scheduled to throw another bullpen session on Tuesday.
This session marks Ohtani’s second bullpen since his return to throwing, as he continues his rehabilitation from a knee injury that has kept him from pitching since early July. He expressed optimism about his progress, noting that he did not experience any setbacks after a 35-pitch session last Friday.
"The other day was good," Ohtani said through a translator. "If I feel good again tomorrow, I’d like to throw a bullpen."
Ohtani’s performance at the plate was exceptional, going 4-for-5 with his two home runs and three RBIs, contributing to the Dodgers’ highest-scoring game since July 2. Manager Dave Roberts praised Ohtani's performance, describing it as "really exceptional" and highlighting his plate discipline and ability to hit to all fields.
"When he does that," Roberts said, "there’s nobody better on the plate, so really good to see."
While Ohtani’s left knee and right biceps have shown improvement, he acknowledged they are not yet at 100%. He is proceeding cautiously with his return to pitching and hopes to do so in the shortest time possible. Before potentially returning to game action, he will need to complete at least two live batting practice sessions in addition to his bullpen progression.
If Ohtani returns to the mound during the playoffs, his usage might be adapted. He indicated a willingness to be flexible, depending on the health and performance of the rest of the Dodgers’ pitching rotation. Initially, he anticipates being built up inning by inning, potentially reaching 4-5 innings by the start of the postseason. This could lead to a role as a multi-inning opener rather than a full-time starter, especially if the team's top starters are healthy.
The Dodgers have also seen encouraging signs from other pitchers, with Blake Snell performing well in his recent outings and Tyler Glasnow nearing a return from the injured list. Ohtani acknowledged the team's strong starting rotation and indicated that his goal is to pitch effectively if he gets the opportunity.
"I think if I can pitch the way I can pitch, that would be good," he said.
For now, Ohtani remains focused on his pitching ramp-up and maintaining his offensive production, where he leads the National League in OPS. "When you’re progressing well [as a pitcher], I think your mood improves and you’re able to step into the box with positive thoughts," he commented.
